You might think something that is constantly cleaning other things is clean itself, right? Negative Ghost Rider! Just think about all that food and grease that is bouncing around inside. Some of it is bound to be accumulating in your dishwasher. Simply follow these 7 easy steps to get your dishwasher clean, which will help you get cleaner dishes, as well. Once you’ve cleaned your dishwasher, be sure to read our Dishwashers and Soap blog to help your dishwasher get those dishes clean enough to, well, eat off of.
1. You’ll want to do this first step after running a cycle
For this cycle, avoid the heat dry to keep from burning yourself. Empty out your dishwasher completely-dishes, racks, and utensil tray/basket.
2. Check the spinning arms
Once your dishwasher is empty, check the spinning arms to ensure all of the holes are clear of debris. You can use a toothpick, but don’t scratch the finish!
3. Check under the bottom of the door
Under the bottom of the door is a spot where debris might be accumulating, especially if no water is getting there. On the floor of your dishwasher you will find a drain, around the drain will be a grate or a grill. Make sure you remove anything that’s clogging this area.
4. Use a toothbrush and baking soda & water mixture
For this next step you’ll want to use a toothbrush and a baking soda & water mixture. The mixture should be thick like a paste. Use the mixture and toothbrush to clean around the drain. Be sure that all food particles are cleared. Be sure to check for any stickers or tags that might have come off of jars or dishes.
5. Use a mixture of white vinegar and a few drops of lemon juice
For this step, you can use a mixture of white vinegar and a few drops of lemon juice. Wipe around the seal with this mixture. You can use your toothbrush to get into harder-to-get areas.
6. Remove any food particles from the utensil rack/basket
Remove any food particles from the utensil rack/basket, then wipe them down. If they are extra dirty, you can let them soak overnight in soap and water. Rinse well the next day.
7. Remove hard water deposits
To remove hard water deposits, you can run a cycle with distilled white vinegar. Make sure your dishwasher is still empty and add 2 cups of white vinegar to the bottom. Use your energy saving or low setting for this. Stop the wash mid-cycle and let it stand for about 20 minutes, then let the wash finish.
